Hartford Friendship Walk Volunteer
Best Buddies in Connecticut
On Sunday, April 26th Best Buddies in Connecticut will be hosting our annual Friendship Walk at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford. Registration begins at 12pm and the Walk will run from 1:00-3:00pm. We are expecting approximately 1,000 walkers to join us in support of our mission of acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is a family friendly event with participants of all ages joining in the fun! We are looking for individuals to assist with set-up, registration, greeters, parking, and packing up at the end of the event. Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut
Help immigrants learn English! No prior teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language is required. We will train you! When? 2 hours per week at a time convenient for you Where? public locations (primarily libraries) or at our office in New Britain What do we do? help adults learn English, become citizens, advance their careers/education and support their families We have a variety of volunteer opportunities including individual tutoring (working with a small group of 1-4 students), language groups (team teaching a class of up to 10 students), or leading a focus group (a class focused on a specific subject such as digital literacy or civics). Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Founded in 1990, Best Buddies in Connecticut is a statewide organization with over 3,100 participants including 2,950 students in 65 elementary, middle, high school and college/university chapters as well as 150 adults in our Citizens program. Best Buddies serves individuals with IDD and their families. The IDD community includes, but is not limited to, people with Down syndrome, autism, Fragile X, Williams syndrome, and other undiagnosed disabilities. Best Buddies is the largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people worldwide with IDD. Our programs empower people with IDD to form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure jobs, improve communication and advocacy skills, and live independently, while also offering support for their families.
